Dated as 03 October 2022

PRESS RELAESE on the Joint Communique on 30 September 2022 by Prime Minister of Ethiopia (Abiy Ahmed) & the president of Somalia (Hassan Sheikh) calling the UN Security Council for lifting Somalia’s arms Embargo

For Immediate Press Release

Coalition of Somali HRDs CSHRDs

Mogadishu, Somalia.

The Coalition of Somali Human Rights Defenders CSHRDs issues this press release is intended to highlight the importance of asserting the UN Security Council to maintain the arms embargo imposed on Somalia to mitigate the effects of the long-standing war and armed conflict in Somalia, that started in 1991, after the overthrow of Somalia’s military regime by armed rebels who then turned guns against each other.

CSHRDs does not see any reason to lift arms embargo imposed on Somalia, unless Somalia proves that it can:

  1. Establish strong justice institutions
  2. Establish constitutional court
  3. Established accountable and unified army command
  4. Ensure that no arms go into the wrong hands e.g. clan federal regional entities & Al-shabab terrorists
  5. Unleash national transitional justice process as national reconciliation basis
  6. Ratify Rome Statue to join the international criminal court
  7. Form independent national human rights commission
  8. Reiterate its commitment to respect international humanitarian and human rights law
  9. Accomplish the incomplete draft constitution

CSHRDs stands to prevent violations from posing immense menace against human rights and responds to past, current and future threats against human rights in Somalia.

…End…
