Elections in Somalia are imminent with date and time plan set now for the elections to unleash in October 2021, where there is 30% quota allocated for women in Somalia. Civil society organizations, politicians, traditional leaders, and AMISOM police are all eager to contribute and take constructive and positive role to accomplish indirect elections mission in Somalia.
Challanges
There are numerous challenges facing the elections in Somalia which include:
- – Use of violence & human rights violations as a tool for manipulation and domination
- – 30 % women’s quota and women political participation is being resisted by extremists
- – Security and Alshabab attacks
- – Foreign interventions to create proxies
Possible Human rights Violations During elections
There are possible human rights violations that can take place during elections in Somalia according reports by CSHRDS members.
Human rights observers believe that the probability of mass diplacements in Kismayo and jubaland during elections is very high given the interest of Sheikh Ahmed Madobe who wants to displace local communities and replace them with his people and make demographic change for his own interest by transporting in thousands of families from Ethiopia in order to create a community that supports him and his agenda as the last standing Somali warlord.
Regional human rights observers report that Ahmed has successfully created a civil society that he selected and picked up from his people in order to have human rights violations taking place there unexposed and unreported; any NGO that is run by people belonging to local communities in kismayo are kicked out of Jubaland in order to affect a full manipulation, many women human rights defenders were evacuated and other HRDs are reported to at high risk of being killed or arrested in Jubaland, Somalia.
